WWE Friday Night Smackdown
From: Louisville, Kentucky

Other Highlights:
After Kane talked about vengeance a bit in the ring we went to the back to see Rey Mysterio getting an ankle brace put on. Then to Jack swagger talking on the phone with his apparent alibi.

The Straight Edge Society came down to the ring, but were interrupted by The Big Show carrying two ladders to the ring, a big one and a small one. He mocked the SES for a minute and then the SES stepped out near the announce table to let Show talk.Turns out Show had a special ladder made that can hold up to 2,000 pounds for the Money in the Bank match. When Show let his guard down Luke Gallows and the other masked guy jumped him from behind and beat him down briefly. When they began to celebrate Show got back up and threw them out of the ring. This left C.M. Punk on top of the ladder and all by himself. Show climbed up the ladder and got a hold of Punk. Once he had him neutralized he tore the mask off Punk so everyone could finally see his big bald head.

Jack Swagger’s dad finally showed up with an envelope with a tape or disc in it that was sent to the production truck. It was apparently proof of his alibi. His proof was a bunch of bad pictures of him and his dad competing in Memorial Day competitions. Kane wasn’t buying it. He came down and attacked Swagger, but thanks to a distraction by his dad, Swagger got the upper hand. Then out came Rey Mysterio who hit a quick 6-1-9 and then hobbled back up the ramp. Kane grabbed Swagger’s dad by the throat, and then Swagger by the throat. Swagger broke out of the grasp and left the ring, but Kane held tight n his dad. Swagger wouldn’t get in the ring to help his dad and Kane Chockeslammed him. Swagger still would not get in the ring, so Kane picked his dad up for a Tombstone Piledriver. Swagger just walked back up the ramp and left his dad laying in the ring.

Match Results:

Intercontinental Champion Kofi Kingston vs. Annoying Cody Rhodes
This match didn’t get to finish because Kane came out and Chokeslammed both competitors.

Drew MacIntyre vs. Christian
MacIntyre hit the Future Maker DDT and got the pin.

Mixed Tag Team Match
Kelly Kelly 225x300 WWE Friday Night Smackdown Results July 16, 2010WWE Women’s Champion Layla & Trent Baretta vs. Kelly Kelly & Chris Masters
Rosa Perez came jump roping down to the ring and her The Dudebusters went to hold the rope for her. Layla got very upset and the distraction was enough to allow Kelly Kelly roll her up for a pin. Rosa than jumped rope to the back.

Matt Hardy vs. Dolph Ziggler
Thanks to a distraction from Vicki Guerrero, Dolph Ziggler got the pin.

Wow, this is bad even by recent Smackdown standards. Four total matches, one didn’t even get to finish, and all three of the others ended due to interference. Plus they weren’t even very good matchups really. I understand wanting to give the wrestlers some time off to gear up for the PPV, but you can’t forget about your weekly shows. If I had paid money to see this Smackdown I would probably be very upset. I just hope that this Monday’s Raw is much better since I will be at it live! On the plus side, I am pretty certain we will be seeing Triple H making his return live on Monday! (Well returning at the PPV, but then to Raw on Monday.)

WWE Friday Night Smackdown Results – June 11, 2010

WWE Friday Night Smackdown
From: Tampa, Florida

Kane 228x300 WWE Friday Night Smackdown Results June 11, 2010

The show started off the always expected showdown in the ring of superstars who will be in one of the main events at the next PPV. Rey Mysterio, Jack Swagger, C.M. Punk, and The Big Show all made their way to the ring at the usual intervals. After they were done Kane came on the Titantron to talk about getting vengeance.

First match of the night -
Rey Mysterio vs. Jack Swagger

This match seemed to take a very long time, that was mainly due to them taking two commercial breaks during the match. In the end Rey hit a third 619 and got the pin.

After the match Swagger attacked Rey, but Kane made his way out and Chokeslammed both of them.

Next out came Lay-Cool along with their rookie from NXT, Kaval (See more about him and the new season of NXT in an upcoming post) After an annoying segment having to do with makeovers out came Layla’s opponent accompanied by Kelly Kelly.

Layla vs. Tiffany
Layla got the win after Tiffany had knocked Michelle McCool off the ring apron to the floor.

Then after a commercial they reaired the entire 14 minute segment from the end of Raw with NXT attacking, followed of course by more commercials. They must have need tons of filler for tonight’s show. Match count after more than an hour is 2. To waste more time they reviewed the return of The Peep Show from a couple week’s ago with guest Hornswoggle which ended with Chavo and Dolph Ziggler attacking. Then they review their match from last week too. Then after Christian made his way to the ring out came Vicki Guerrero to excuse herself and annoy us a bit. Oh, she also introduced his opponent, Dolph Ziggler.

Christian vs. Dolph Ziggler

Well this match only needed one commercial break before Christian hit the a sunset flip off the middle rope and pinned Ziggler as Vicki watched on from a ringside seat near the announce table.

After the match Kurt Hawkins and Vance Archer attacked Christian. Now that Christian was down and out Ziggler moved in and locked on “the vicious Sleeper Hold” which was then followed by a big hug for Vicki.

Then to the back with more Kane mourning and demanding vengeance.

After the commercial Drew MacIntyre came out to the ring to bitch a bit more. He called out Teddy Long. He demanded that Teddy watch the Titantron. He showed him the replay of last Friday where Matt Hardy came out of the crowd to attack him, and then pinned him in a match on Raw’s Viewer’s Choice show. He then went on to say how Mr. McMahon has suspended Hardy from all WWE programming. It seemed as if MacIntyre was about to tell Teddy that he was fired, but Kofi Kingston interrupted him to point out how sick and tired everyone is about listening to MacIntyre crying. Kingston got in the ring face to face with him and said that on behalf of the entire WWE Universe he is telling him to shut up! He then hit MacIntyre in the head with the mic and the fight went on until Kingston hit MacIntyre with the Trouble in Paradise which sent him from the ring apron down to the floor.

After the commercial MacIntyre caught up with Teddy Long in the back. The news wasn’t that Teddy was fired, but instead that next week Teddy would face Drew MacIntyre in a match. If he doesn’t show up though, he will be fired.

The Big Show vs. C.M. Punk

As Show was trying to get the mask off of Punk the Straight Edge Society attacked. After they beat on him a bit out came Kane again. He Chokeslammed the masked mystery guy and Luke Gallows, but Punk escaped the ring. Kane then turned his attention to Show who he also Chokeslammed.

First off, why can’t McMahon deal with competition a bit. I feel he purposely scheduled a Smackdown in Tampa on the same week that TNA is holding Slammiversary in hopes maybe people will only have enough money to go to one of the shows and maybe they will pick Smackdown over Slammiversary. Personally I think you are a fool to not pick the PPV, especially for a normally subpar show (as of late) like Smackdown. I mean four matches, really? Especially THOSE four matches?

Next topic, I certainly hope The Undertaker heals quickly from his fractured nose, broken orbital bone, and concussion. The Kane vengeance storyline is already getting annoying.

Also overly annoying is the Lay-Cool best friend’s forever / bad Beautiful People knockoff. On the bright side, I think I only barely saw Layla’s ass crack once this week. Unfortunately, she did loan a pair of her pants to Sarena.

LOL, OK, it seems all I have to comment about this week on Smackdown is annoyances. The two other annoyances; Drew MacIntyre chosen one crap, and Dolph Ziggler and Vicki replaying the Edge-Vicki storyline.

WWE Friday Night Smackdown Results – May 28, 2010

Saturday, May 29th, 2010

WWE Friday Night Smackdown
From: Cleveland, Ohio

The show started off with Teddy Long in the ring to announce that there would be qualifying matches to see who would be in the Fatal 4-Way match against Champion Jack Swagger. The Big Show is automatically in the match because of his win over Swagger at Over the Limit. The qualifying matches were going to be C.M. Punk vs. Kane and Rey Mysterio vs. The Undertaker.
Out came Drew MacIntyre to interrupt and bitch about his loss to Kofi Kingston. He said his match should have been stopped due to a laceration on his arm. He had a letter for Teddy to read out loud. It said Matt Hardy is suspended without pay indefinitely due to his attack on MacIntyre at Over the Limit.

World Heavyweight Champion Jack Swagger & Drew MacIntyre vs. The Big Show & Intercontinental Champion Kofi Kingston

Swagger had a black eye and his ribs were taped. After a rather long, mostly boring match The Big Show pinned MacIntyre after landing a big punch while Swagger watched from the floor.

Then to the back with the Straight Edge Society and Punk trying to be convinced that he looks fine bald. Then off to Vicki Guerrero who was yelling at Kurt Hawkins and Vance Archer in Spanish. Hawkins calmed her down by pointing out that she doesn’t need to worry because he and Lance Hoyt, ummm Vance Archer were going to make an iMPACT! before their 15 day contract ran out. Then in came Dolph Ziggler. An annoying storyline got started when Vicki took a bit too much a liking to Ziggler. As the segment ended the camera zoomed in on her Cougar necklace. She did give him a match with Chavo as his partner against Christian and Hornswoggle.

Out came the SES. When C.M. Punk removed the towel from his head he was wearing a mask. It looked ridiculous with SES down the nose of the mask, and his beard sticking way out. It looked more like an S&M mask than a Lucha Libre mask.

Fatal 4-Way Qualifying Match
C.M. Punk vs. Kane

Punk tried to go for the GTS but Kane grabbed hold of the mask. At this point Sarena distracted the referee which allowed Luke Gallows to land a shot to Kane’s head. Punk then picked him up for the GTS again. This time the problem was that Punk just simply couldn’t execute the move with someone as heavy as Kane. He did it, but it looked horrible and didn’t really connect well. Punk got the three count and will be in the Fatal 4-Way for the Heavyweight Championship.

At this point we were just over 1 hour into the show and we have seen 2 whole matches! Now they will cram 3 or 4 filler matches into the next 45 minutes so they can get in the Undertaker-Mysterio match in the final 8 minutes of the show.

Filler Match #1:
Christian & Hornswoggle vs. Chavo Guerrero & Dolph Ziggler

Vicki tried to seem like a genius when she made this match earlier. The problem is Horny holds victories over both of them.
Christian hit the Killswitch and got the pin.

Ziggler came back into the ring after the match and put the Sleeper Hold on Christian.

Good God! The next segment with Co-Women’s Champions LayCool in the back talking made me miss the days of Vicki and Edge annoying us all in the back.

Filler Match #2
Luke Gallows vs. M.V.P.

Sarena distracted the ref again, this time the hooded guy came out and hit M.V.P. with a DDT on the ring apron. Galllows got the pin.

Before the commercial they said the Undertaker-Mysterio match was coming up next. I guess since between the two of them their ring entrances should take about 7 or 8 minutes they decided to just throw in the 2 filler matches. Then after the commercial they reshowed all of the Batista-Cena storylne and Batista quitting on Raw last week.

Well from the time that Rey Mysterios music started and the time the bell rang it was JUST under 8 minutes. That does include the commercial in between.

Fatal 4-Way Qualifying Match
The Undertaker vs. Rey Mysterio

Less than 2 minutes into the match it was time for yet another commercial break! Taker threw Rey out to the floor and then worked on his arm and shoulder area, ramming him into the ring post, and ring barrier. He rolled into the ring multiple times to break the count. Mysterio battled back for a bit, even hitting the 619. Taker turned it around and hit the Tombstone Pile Driver followed by the pin. He did all of that with a very bloody nose.

So, the Fatal 4-Way match will be Champion Jack swagger vs. The Big Show vs. The Undertaker, and C.M. Punk will technically be in the match too, but I am sure that won’t really matter.

Wow, 4 whole matches in 2 hours. Things have really gone downhill. They couldn’t even run 5 minutes late tonight, the show ended at exactly 2 hours!

griffinpeter 238x300 WWE Friday Night Smackdown Results May 28, 2010The best part of the show was the beginning of Family Guy afterwards. It was the one right after they returned from being canceled where Peter starts the show by telling the family that the show has been canceled. Canceled so Fox could make room for terrific shows like; Dark Angel, Titus, Undeclared, Action, That ’80′s Show, Wonderfalls, Fastlane, Andy Richter Controls the Universe, Skin, Girls Club, Cracking Up, The Pitts, Firefly, Get Real, Freaky Links, Wanda at Large, Costello, The Lone Gunman, A Minute With Stan Hooper, Normal, Ohio, Pasadena, Harsh Realm, Keen Eddie, The Street, American Embassy, Cedric the Entertainer, The Tick, Louie, and Greg the Bunny. Then Lois says, “Is there no hope?” and Peter replies, “Well I suppose if ALL those shows go down the tubes, we might have a shot.”

WWE Friday Night Smackdown Results – May 21, 2010

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

WWE Friday Night Smackdown

The show started off with the Straight Edge Society in the ring with 3 random people. It looked like a bad episode of The Dating Game. Then Luke Gallows and Sarena actually did the talking. Bachelor #2 could have finished in the top 3 at a Matt Stryker look-a-like contest. OK, the one thing I hate more than Orlando Jordan’s current persona in TNA is this Straight Edge Soceity crap. I am still glad to see Festus talking and acting normal though. The three guys in the ring took the pledge to the SES and then had their heads shaved. The head shaving wasn’t quite finished when Rey Mysterio came out. Rey came out to show Punk how he was going to look once he was bald. After the commercial Punk said he was going to show everyone just what they were going to do to Rey on Sunday at Over the Limit. The SES then attacked the three guys they had just shaven.

As LayCool came to the ring they were introduced as Co-Women’s Champions.

LayCool (Michelle McCool & Layla) vs. Tiffany & Kelly Kelly
Layla needs a better belt. She just can’t seem to keep her shorts up to cover the crack of her ass. She spent more time pulling them up than anything else in the match. McCool hit a Styles Clash, no wait a Faith Breaker and got the pin on Tiffany.
Winners: LayCool

Next was a spot with The Big Show in a very Jack Swagger-esque segment. He listed one of his accomplishments, knocking out Swagger a couple weeks ago.

JTG vs. Caylen Croft (of The Dudebusters)
JTG got the win after hitting the Shout Out.

To the back with Vicki Guerrero talking to Christian about the return of his talk show…The Peep Show. She offered to be his guest, he turned her down because he wants people to actually watch the show. The people sent in their suggestions and he said Vicki wasn’t in the top 100.

Another, Seriously? moment on the way. lol

Tag team match
Curt Hawkins & Vance Archer vs. Brent Roberts and Jeremy Barner
Hawkins got the pin on Brent Roberts

World Heavyweight Champion Jack Swagger vs. Kofi Kingston
Thanks to a distraction from The Big Show, Kofi Kingston got the three count to win the match.

HornyDX WWE Friday Night Smackdown Results May 21, 2010Time for The Peep Show with Christian. His guest who “he has never seen eye to eye with” was Hornswoggle. Christian taught him some “Canadian”. Words and phrases like, “You Hoser”, “Hockey”, and “Beer”. Vicki interupted to shutdown The Peep Show. She was unhappy that Hornswoggle was his #1 guest. Christina said he was about to teach Horny some other words like “Obesity”, and “Moose”. She told him to leave the ring or she had someone to help him leave. As Chavo approached the ring Dolph Ziggler came in and jumped Christian from behind. Then Chavo hit the Frog Splash.

Rey Mysterio & M.V.P. vs. C.M. Punk & Luke Gallows
The mysterious masked guy tried to interfere in the match again, but Rey took him out quickly. He then rolled Punk up for the pin.

The Big Show vs. Intercontinental Champion Drew McIntyre
Show was about to wrap up the match when JAck Swagger came out and attacked. He eventually went out and got a steel chair but as he charged with it Show punched it right out of his hands. Swagger then retreated back up the ramp.
Winner by DQ: The Big Show

Six total matches and we all knew who was going to win 5 of them. It makes me very happy that I just found out that the WWE is coming to Tulsa in June, and it is Raw and not Smackdown I will be watching. They need to do something to make the show better. It is too boring and predictable right now.

WWE Friday Night Smackdown Results – May 14, 2010

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

WWE Friday Night Smackdown
From: HSBC Arena in Buffalo, New York

Christian vs. Kofi Kingston

This match was for the vacant Intercontinental Championship which was stripped from Drew MacIntyre last week. It was a good match that ended with Kingston winning the title after hitting the Trouble in Paradise.

Out came MacIntyre with a letter from Mr. McMahon that said he was reinstated, and still the champion. So Teddy Long had to take the title from Kingston and return it to MacIntyre.

Shad Gaspard vs. Jesse Guyver

Seriously?

That is all I am going to say about that one, you figure out who won. Also if you can figure out why it was on TV please let me know.

M.V.P. & J.T.G. vs. The Dude Busters (Trent Baretta & Caylen Croft)

OK, Jesse Guyver may have put up a better fight. The initials win it.

After a rant in the back by C.M. Punk we see people carrying Jack Swagger’s many trophies to the ring for after the commercial.

SwaggerAt5 228x300 WWE Friday Night Smackdown Results May 14, 2010After the commercial Jack Swagger came out and began rambling on. Soon after he got started they had to go to another commercial. He just went on and on, again, as usual. Sadly it made me miss the days of having to listen to Edge and Vicki nstead.

The past few segments lead me to wonder if maybe filling 6 hours of TV time a week might be too much for the WWE. I mean, do we really need this much filler? Just kill NXT and Superstars and maybe put some more content into Smackdown and Raw?

Finally the Big Show came out to stop the endless annoying ramblings. Then the inevitable happened, Show started destroying all of Swagger’s stuff. Swagger looked like he was ready to cry. After breaking everything Show raised the World Heavyweight Championship high above his head.

Women’s Championship Match

Champion Beth Phoenix vs. Rosa Mendes

Before the match began out came Vicki Guerrero to tell Rosa to leave the ring. She then announced Michelle McCool was invoking her rematch clause for the title. Then she went on to say that for the first time ever the Women’s title would be defended in a 2 on 1 handicap match.

Beth Phoenix vs. LayCool (Layla and Michelle McCool)

In a total fluke Layla got the pin and won the title. This is sure to break up LayCool…yayayaya! Michelle was clearly trying to hog the belt during the celebration.

Kane vs. Chavo Guerrero

Kane made short work of Chavo.

In the back Teddy Long informs Drew MacIntyre that he will have a match next week against The Big Show.

C.M. Punk vs. Rey Mysterio

Punk had the SES stay in the back…well until he needed them. They came out and interfered in the match. Sarita came out ddressed like the mysterious hooded figure that has come out in the past. Rey almost hit her, but then she pulled the hood and mask off. While he was distracted the actual hooded guy jumped him from behind. Winner of the match by disqualification Rey Mysterio. Punk was on his knees and put his arms out, Gallows and the hooded guy picked Mysterio up and put him on his shoulders so he could hit the GTS. He then put Rey’s arms in position to do the “Pledge to the Straight Edge Society”.

So, six total matches…the best one of them turned out to not mean anything because the winner didn’t get the title. Then there was a string of about 35 minutes that in no way should have made it onto TV, and 2 more matches that were also really filler (Kane and Women’s matches). So in the end 2 matches sort of worth watching, if you count the Mysterio-Punk match that we will probably see again next week, and then at Over the Limit.

Really Vince, maybe we should consider going back to two, 2 hour shows a week.

WWE Friday Night Smackdown Results – May 7, 2010

big show 300x231 WWE Friday Night Smackdown Results May 7, 2010

Matt Hardy came out to talk a bit. this brought Drew MacIntyre out also. While MacIntyre attacked Hardy repeatedly officials tried to get him back, but to no avail. Then GM Theodore Long came out and warned him to stop. That also didn’t slow him down. Long then suspended him, and it went on, he stripped him of the Intercontinental Title, he kept going, and Long finally told him he was fired. The officials then managed to get him out of the building.

M.V.P. vs. Luke Gallows

The Straight Edge Society is very annoying, but I must say it is better than seeing the whole Festus act. Luke Gallows/Festus has a lot of potential, and he can come closer to living up to it as Gallows than as Festus. Wish he could talk C.M. Punk into shaving some stuff though, or at least bathing.
M.V.P. wins by pinfall. Serena distracted M.V.P. momentarily, which led to Rey Mysterio coming out to attack Punk. This was enough of a distraction for M.V.P. to get the upper hand back and win the match.

After the match Punk called out Mysterio and they talked and talked for a bit. What it came down to was Mysterio challenging Punk to a match at Over the Limit. If Punk wins Mysterio joins the Straight Edge Society, if Mysterio wins Punk’s head gets shaved.

Kelly Kelly & Tiffany vs. Michelle McCool & Layla

So, the WWE’s attempt at a team like The Beautiful People is LayCool. Problem is, while McCool is nice to look at, and she can wrestle…Layla is just plain annoying. Add in Vicki Guerrero and all interest is lost.
LayCool wins. Layla pinned Tiffany after a distraction from both McCool and Vicki.

Teddy Long then announced there is a four man tournament for the Intercontinental Championsip. Christian will face Cody Rhodes, and Dolph Ziggler will face Kofi Kingston. The two winners will face next Friday with the winner becoming Intercontinental Champion.

Kofi Kingston vs. Dolph Ziggler
Kingston wins. Kingston broke out of the Sleeper Hold, hit the Trouble in Paradise kick and got the pin.

Christian vs. Cody Rhodes
Christian wins. Christian hit the Killswitch and got the pin.
Christian vs. Kofi Kingston for the Intercontinental Championship next week. Now that will be a pretty good match. Unlike most of this week’s matches.

World Heavyweight Champion Jack Swagger vs. Kane
Swagger got disqualified for not breaking in the corner as he drove Kane into the exposed turnbuckle. Swagger then headed to the announce table where The Big Show was sitting. Kane came up behind Swagger and hit him with a big boot. Kane got the announce table ready to slam him through it, but Swagger got the edge. Then Swagger turned his back on Show. Show grabbed him and Chokeslammed him through the announce table. Show then rolled into the ring and raised Swagger’s title above his head.

Another less than spectacular show again. Next week has to be better with the Christian vs. Kingston match. It will probably be the one bright spot in the show.

The State of Pro Wrestling

Monday, May 3rd, 2010

Wow, I can’t believe I haven’t posted here in almost a year! I also got behind in watching the many hours of wrestling I watch every week. That didn’t happen until around October though. What brought me back to wrestling? It wasn’t hearing that Bret Hart was returning to the WWE, or that The Undertaker got burned during his ring entrance at a pay-per view. It was hearing that Hulk Hogan was coming to TNA.

Hogan TNA 300x192 The State of Pro Wrestling

When I heard that I rushed to get caught up with watching every TNA weekly show, and pay-per view since October. It was a week filled with A LOT of wrestling. I never did watch each week of the WWE. Instead I watched a pay-per view or three, then skipped ahead to Wrestlemania XXVI this past week. Of course by this point I was addicted again. So, I had to watch the Raw after Mania so I could see Shawn Michaels’s “farewell”. Then I also watched the rest of the Raws up to this past week. I also watched this week’s NXT and Smackdown shows. I was then glad I didn’t spend the many hours it would have taken to watch the rest of the Smackdown’s I had missed.

So, now for the actual purpose of this post. I have decided that once a year I will post about the current state of professional wrestling. It will always come about a month after Wrestlemania since it is the “Super Bowl of Pro Wrestling”.

The current state of wrestling is looking better and better I think. Now that there is actually a chance for there to be some competition. Granted the TV ratings aren’t looking too promising for TNA head to head against Raw.

RVD 275x300 The State of Pro Wrestling

The Whole F'n Show!

I love how TNA can actually get WWE talent to head south, and that they are giving some a chance to get back in the ring. Especially one of my all-time favorites… Rob Van Damme. RVD and Jeff Hardy as a tag team would be amazing if they could have stayed together. RVD as TNA Champion so soon after his return to the ring is nice though.

The WWE seems to be heading in the wrong direction. I mean I realize they are such a huge juggernaut that things can’t and won’t come crashing down, but if it weren’t for that it just might have. In the few Raws, pay-per-views, and the one Smackdown and NXT shows I did watch to get caught up, I must say it was mostly disappointing. Smackdown was totally unentertaining. The one point I thought the show was looking up was during Edge’s farewell before he heads to Raw. When Christian came out I was hoping they would become a tag team again, just like many others probably were. Instead it was for Edge to become a heel again, and for Christian to sort of disown him.Vince McMahon 300x228 The State of Pro Wrestling

One thing that upsets me very much is McMahon’s insistence that if your name isn’t Ric Flair then you are NOT allowed to talk about any world title that doesn’t belong to the WWE…and even some that do belong to the WWE. On that Smackdown when Christian came out he was back to “never being a World Champion ever”. Sorry Vince, not only was he TNA World Champion, but you know that company/brand you pretty much ruined…ECW? Like I said, I missed a few months, so what actually happened to ECW? You killed it for this NXT rookie crap? Whatever happened to a guy proving his worth in Ohio or down in Florida? I haven’t seen the ratings for the show, but I am willing to bet they suck, and are probably worse than ECW ratings were. I am sort of happy to see Vince’s bastardized version of ECW is gone though. There was NOTHING extreme about ECW. I love how they would make a huge deal of the occasional match that was contested under “extreme rules”. Now if they would just kill off the Extreme Rules pay-per-view too.

The Raw shows I saw weren’t much better either, although they did have a few interesting matches. I really don’t see how they are beating TNA in ratings week in and week out. I just don’t see how Shaemus can get into the title picture. He should be wrestling Santino Marella and Carlito…not Triple H, Randy Orton, and John Cena. By the way, I got excited to see Cena and Orton as a tag team. Only to be let down when Orton left him alone in the match. You can turn Batista back into a heel, but can’t make Orton a fan favorite? Sheesh.

Now as for TNA… I know there are rumors of “politics” going on backstage and people being upset with how Hogan and Bischoff are running things. So much so that people are leaving the company over it. But really, Awesome Kong hadn’t been on TV for a while before they arrived, and Christopher Daniels has been on the outs for a while too. Now Tara is most likely leaving because they wouldn’t give her what she considered a small raise. This doesn’t surprise me a bunch. I mean if Hogan and Bischoff are in charge the Knockouts division is going to me more like the WWE Divas. More like The Beautiful People than the Litas and Gail Kims of women’s wrestling. To explain that comment a bit…yes they are all hot, but Lita and Gail can WRESTLE too, as can Tara.

The fact that TNA can sign talent like RVD, Jeff Hardy, and Mr. Anderson, not to mention keeping people like Kurt Angle, Samoa Joe, and a lot of the talent that was in place before the change is a sign of good things to come for TNA. Sure they will lose a few that won’t get along with Bischoff, or even Hogan, but the benefits outweigh the losses they will have. That is of course as long as they realize that doing things like bringing the Nasty Boys along for the ride just won’t work. No one wants to see Saggy Nobs hanging all out in the ring! They need to limit Ric Flair’s in ring time too. Sure he is a legend, and should be allowed to do just about anything he wants, but no one wants to see him in the ring against Abyss. Use his mind (which at times he has obviously lost), not his beaten and battered body.

I even have the perfect way to let Flair bow out of the ring in a spectacular way. Have a Legends Battle Royale to set the seeding for a Legends Tournament. The entrants will be all the Legends they have on the roster, and however many more they can pull out of retirement for a month or so. People like Flair, Hogan, Nash, Hall, Sting, and Angle. They could surely get a few others who are just sitting around enjoying retirement. Then add in two or three “Future Legends” to the mix. Either pick them, or let them have their own mini-tournament to decide who gets in. Then if Flair wins he can walk away from the ring (yet again) and just stick around as a manager and front office guy helping drive the company in the right direction. (See my note later for one more additional Legend to join this match.)

One thing I am unhappy about since the beginning of the Hogan/Bischoff era is that entrance ramp. First you take away the Six-Sided Ring that had become TNA’s trademark. Then you add that elevated entrance ramp. There are a number of reasons the ramp is a bad idea. First, someone is going to get injured badly when they go out of the ring on that side unexpectedly and hit the ramp the wrong way. Second, it takes away the only real space outside the ring, now that it is square again. This pretty much kills like 85-90% of the excitement of the X Division…yeah that other signature thing TNA had going for it that no one else could touch. Some of the most exciting matches ever in TNA were those X Division World Tournament battles. Lots of guys you had never heard of putting it all out there risking injury and even their lives to do the crazy things they would do, at the speeds they did them. Bring more of that back and maybe the ratings would go back up.

Obviously TNA can’t just pull out of Monday nights. Vince would have a field day with it if they did. They need to find a way to do more live shows. they ratings are better for the live shows. They also need to find some way to move the show around. Sure having a dedicated crowd sitting in The Impact Zone is great, but if they moved around to some different locales it would help in a few ways. You would get more money in ticket sales, which could help offset the traveling and production expenses, and it would probably in turn increase the TV ratings. Even if it is the 10,000 people at the live show TiVoing it to see if they got on TV.

Ratings will improve greatly simply by making one rumor come to pass. IT has been rumored that the legendary Jim Ross might be joining TNA. That would be incredible! His wrestling mind, his commentating in a seat between Mike Tenay and Taz, and the pull he would give the company could be what they need to put them over the top. By pull I mean, if Jim Ross is in TNA there will be more talent interested in coming into TNA. Ross is well respected just about everywhere, especially the locker rooms. Many would gladly join the company knowing Good Ole J.R. could help them along.

Anyway, now one last comment and my ratings to finish up this post.

Shawn Michaels 300x186 The State of Pro Wrestling

HBK to TNA?

During last week’s TNA Impact! Hall and Nash were asked what they would do now that Six Pac/Shawn Waltman was hurt. Nash made a comment about how maybe next week they would have someone else with them. So, here is my thinking on the matter. “The Band” as they have been being called needs to be “tuned up” a bit. Adding some Sweet Chin Music to their set list would be a great improvement. Shawn Michaels had his WWE Farewell speech a little over a month ago. The WWE Draft just happened, which usually coincides with talent contracts running out and being renewed. So, is The Heartbreak Kid free to head south and join The Kliq/The Band, whatever you want to call it? He would also be joining Sting, with whom he had done a TBN (Trinity Broadcasting Network) show with, and friend Ric Flair whom he retired a little over two years ago at Wrestlemania XXIV. They could just pull Sting into the group and start calling themselves The Wolfpack again. HBK would fit nicely into my Legends Tournament that I mentioned earlier too.

My Ratings:
Show/Company – Grade
WWE Friday Night Smackdown – D

WWE Superstars – F
I have watched this show all of about 5 times since it debuted. It just isn’t interesting.

WWE NXT – F
Watched this once and most of it was on fast forward. lol

WWE Raw – B
Needs more improvement

WWE Pay-Per-Views – B
They still manage to mix in 1-3 matches in between the waste of time matches that make the shows entertaining.

WWE Overall – C-
If TNA can find the right formula before the WWE can find a way to make things more nteresting the McMahon Empire could take a bit of a hit.

TNA Impact – B
It is still an exciting show each week, unlike the WWE shows usually. However, they need more X Division mixed in, and probably less Hogan/Bischoff storylines. Just like the McMahon storylines and every week appearances it can get old real quick.

TNA Pay-Per-Views – B+
They can really put on a great 3 hour pay-per-view. There are times when the filler matches can get annoying, but overall they are slightly better than the WWE PPVs.

TNA Overall – B
They are headed in the right direction despite what TV ratings show. They still just need to convince more people to try the brand. Once they do they could quickly become fans. As I have said numerous times – MORE X Division again. Let them fly! You have some of the greatest wrestling minds in the company, use them.

WWE Smackdown (4-24-09)

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Smackdown

Edge started off the show by talking about his upcoming match with John Cena at Backlash.

Jeff Hardy & C.M. Punk vs. Matt Hardy & Kane

These two battles raged on in yet another match. At least they made it a tag team this time for a little variety. Matt got the three count after shoving Jeff off into his partner Kane and then rolling him up from behind.

The Undertaker vs. The Big Show

It was one last battle between the huge stars before Show left for Raw. As always when these two get together it was a pretty good match. It ended with a big right hand to the back of the Undertaker’s head. The referee called for the bell saying that Taker could not continue.

Gail Kim vs. Divas Champion Maryse in a Title Match

Just as Melina on Monday – Maryse won her farewell match and will be taking her title belt with her to Raw.

MVP defended his United States title successfully against Dirk Ziggler.

Batista ring entranceBatista & Shane McMahon vs. Ted DiBiase & Cody Rhodes

Batista and Shane got through this match with just a minor glitch where Shane inadvertently ran into Batista once, knocking him to the floor. Soon after though Batista was pushing Shane out of the way to catch Rhodes coming off the top rope and slamming him down with a devastating Spinebuster. he rolled out before the ref turned around and Shane got the three count. All seemed well between them after the match.

Smackdown 4-10-09

Matt Hardy came down to the ring to gloat about his victory over Jeff at Wrestlemania. He said that if Jeff didn’t come down to apologize to him that he would find him and make him leave the building on a stretcher. Jeff came down, Matt headed back up the ramp. Out came the newly named Smackdown General Manager, Teddy Long. Due to Matt’s comments about how he would make Jeff leave the building on a stretcher if he had come to the ring, Teddy made a Stretcher Match for later in the night.

After an interview in the back Kofi Kingston heads to the ring for a match against The Big Show. Show pretty much manhandle Kofi, throwing him all of the ring in between poundings. Kofi showed a few glimmers of hopes using his feet to occasionally land a blow. Show connected with a big punch as Kingston leaped from the top rope, and then got the three count.

Santino Marella came down to the ring next. He apparently issued an open “invichallenge” to showcase his wrestling skills to the fans in case he is drafted next Monday. The Great Khali accepted the challenge, but offered Santino a deal. He wouldn’t have to wrestle in the match tonight if Santino would hook him up with his twin sister Santina. Once Santino refused, Khali make quick work of him, and got the three count.

After a tribute to the Undertaker’s 17-0 Wrestlemania streak it was time for a Diva’s match.

Gail Kim vs. Michelle McCool

Gail Kim flies off top rope into Michelle McCool

I was expecting and exciting and fun to watch match here. They didn’t let me down. It was a great and athletic match. In the end Gail Kim reversed a pin and got the three count.

Next up was The Cutting Edge with guest John Cena. It started off with Edge briefly complaining about his loss which then led into the introduction of Cena. after a bunch of back and forth it came down to a commercial for their Last Man Standing match at Backlash. It ended with Edge walking from the ring rather than fighting.

Unified Tag Team Champions Carlito & Primo Colon vs. Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase (Non-Title)

Carlito and Primo were looking impressive in the match until DiBiase slingshotted Carlito’s throat off the top rope. Rhodes followed it with the Crossroads and got the three count. Randy Orton then came down to the ring kicked each of them and raised the hands of his Legacy teammates. After a commercial break they were still in the ring. Orton began talking about their match at Backlash.

Stretcher Match
Jeff Hardy vs. Matt Hardy

Jeff and Matt Hardy in a Stretcher Match

Again, although this one would have been much better about five years ago – it was actually a pretty good match. The highlight was probably Jeff surfboarding down the entrance ramp while standing on the stretcher and then leaping off with a clothesline to Matt. It came to a close when Jeff tried a Swanton Bomb down onto Matt who was on the stretcher. Matt moved and Jeff landed on the stretcher. Matt pushed him up the ramp, having to stop a few times to punch Jeff, and then hitting him with a chair shot to the head. After crossing the line to win the match Matt pushed the stretcher down the ramp, it sped down to crash into the ring.

Not exactly a stellar show to follow up Wrestlemania, but all of the superstars obviously deserved a break after the biggest event in wrestling. It will be interesting to see how this year’s draft shakes out on Monday.
