Smackdown 4-10-09
Matt Hardy came down to the ring to gloat about his victory over Jeff at Wrestlemania. He said that if Jeff didn’t come down to apologize to him that he would find him and make him leave the building on a stretcher. Jeff came down, Matt headed back up the ramp. Out came the newly named Smackdown General Manager, Teddy Long. Due to Matt’s comments about how he would make Jeff leave the building on a stretcher if he had come to the ring, Teddy made a Stretcher Match for later in the night.
After an interview in the back Kofi Kingston heads to the ring for a match against The Big Show. Show pretty much manhandle Kofi, throwing him all of the ring in between poundings. Kofi showed a few glimmers of hopes using his feet to occasionally land a blow. Show connected with a big punch as Kingston leaped from the top rope, and then got the three count.
Santino Marella came down to the ring next. He apparently issued an open “invichallenge” to showcase his wrestling skills to the fans in case he is drafted next Monday. The Great Khali accepted the challenge, but offered Santino a deal. He wouldn’t have to wrestle in the match tonight if Santino would hook him up with his twin sister Santina. Once Santino refused, Khali make quick work of him, and got the three count.
After a tribute to the Undertaker’s 17-0 Wrestlemania streak it was time for a Diva’s match.
Gail Kim vs. Michelle McCool
I was expecting and exciting and fun to watch match here. They didn’t let me down. It was a great and athletic match. In the end Gail Kim reversed a pin and got the three count.
Next up was The Cutting Edge with guest John Cena. It started off with Edge briefly complaining about his loss which then led into the introduction of Cena. after a bunch of back and forth it came down to a commercial for their Last Man Standing match at Backlash. It ended with Edge walking from the ring rather than fighting.
Unified Tag Team Champions Carlito & Primo Colon vs. Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase (Non-Title)
Carlito and Primo were looking impressive in the match until DiBiase slingshotted Carlito’s throat off the top rope. Rhodes followed it with the Crossroads and got the three count. Randy Orton then came down to the ring kicked each of them and raised the hands of his Legacy teammates. After a commercial break they were still in the ring. Orton began talking about their match at Backlash.
Stretcher Match
Jeff Hardy vs. Matt Hardy
Again, although this one would have been much better about five years ago – it was actually a pretty good match. The highlight was probably Jeff surfboarding down the entrance ramp while standing on the stretcher and then leaping off with a clothesline to Matt. It came to a close when Jeff tried a Swanton Bomb down onto Matt who was on the stretcher. Matt moved and Jeff landed on the stretcher. Matt pushed him up the ramp, having to stop a few times to punch Jeff, and then hitting him with a chair shot to the head. After crossing the line to win the match Matt pushed the stretcher down the ramp, it sped down to crash into the ring.
Not exactly a stellar show to follow up Wrestlemania, but all of the superstars obviously deserved a break after the biggest event in wrestling. It will be interesting to see how this year’s draft shakes out on Monday.
